Shri Datta Mandir in Audumbar is a revered shrine dedicated to Lord Dattatreya, situated on the serene banks of the Krishna River. This holy site holds profound significance as it commemorates the penance and miracles of Shri Narasimha Saraswati, considered an incarnation of Lord Dattatreya. Surrounded by lush Audumbar (fig) trees, the shrine’s divine aura attracts devotees seeking spiritual solace and blessings.
The shrine honors Shri Narasimha Saraswati, whose life and teachings are immortalized in the Guru Charitra. His divine acts at Audumbar have made this location a significant pilgrimage destination.
The mandir is renowned for its ability to heal individuals possessed by spirits, and it continues to serve as a beacon of faith and miracles.
Shri Narasimha Saraswati, born in 1304 to a humble Brahmin family, demonstrated extraordinary spiritual abilities from a young age. Following his thread ceremony, he embarked on a holy pilgrimage that led him to Audumbar during the sacred Chaturmasa.
A Brahmin’s dull-witted son, desperate for divine intervention, prayed at the Bhuvaneshwari Temple on the opposite bank of the Krishna. Upon receiving guidance from the goddess, he sought blessings from Narasimha Saraswati.
Before leaving Audumbar, Shri Narasimha Saraswati left his padukas (sacred footwear) under an Audumbar tree. A small shrine was later built over the padukas by a devotee from Pune, marking the spot as eternally sacred.
The Shri Datta Mandir stands in a picturesque location along the Krishna River, offering breathtaking views and serene surroundings. The temple premises are enriched by the divine presence of noted saints like Eknath Maharaj and Janardan Swami.
A Blend of Heritage and Devotion
The temple features a sanctum housing the padukas of Shri Narasimha Saraswati, with an outer mandap constructed in more recent times. The surrounding areas resonate with tranquility, enhanced by the lush Audumbar trees.
A Divine Connection Across the River
On the opposite bank of the Krishna River lies the Bhuvaneshwari Temple, home to an exquisitely sculptured black flint idol of the goddess. Devotees often visit both shrines as part of their pilgrimage.
